How Care Works

Most people come in because something hurts. Here's how care usually goes from there.

Care usually runs in three stages: relief, correction, and long-term wellness. Not everyone needs all three, and how long each one takes depends on what brought you in and how long you've been dealing with it.

1

Relief

The first goal is to bring down the pain you're feeling as quickly as we reasonably can. Visits are usually more frequent at the start, and how long this takes varies from person to person.

2

Corrective

Next we work on stabilizing the area that was injured or weakened to lower the chance it flares up again. Visits usually get less frequent, and we may add stretching and strengthening exercises. Flare-ups can happen and are normal. This phase can run from several weeks to a few months.

3

Wellness

Once you're through the corrective phase, some patients come in on a set schedule to stay ahead of problems, the same way they keep up with exercise or eating well. Others just call when something starts to bother them again. Dr. Brett will talk through what makes sense for you.

Dr. Brett may recommend continuing care after the pain eases. We'll tell you what we recommend and why. You decide.

Pain isn't the whole story

Pain isn't a reliable measure of how healthy your spine is. Think of a cavity: it doesn't hurt while it's developing, only after it's gotten worse. Spinal issues can work the same way. That's part of why we look at your spine directly.

Recovery isn't usually a straight line, so don't get discouraged by a rough week.
